Makes Me Want To Rave

Daily Photo:

In a back room of engineering, you can find this sub-box contraption used for testing drivers.  Although not even remotely apparent in the photo, the room is dark with a strobe light pointed at the driver in order to see its rapid movement in slow motion.  I have no idea what purpose this serves since most all geek-speak goes in one ear and out the other, but it made for a pretty cool photo.

Yeh. And it would be really cool to watch with a test in progress.

It sounds like we need to make a video of this demonstration.

The strobe is very usefule for allowing us to watch the movement of the cone in slow motion.  This is done by taking slices of the image through 360 degrees of phase.  If you vary the rate of flicker the speed of the movement changes from the aliasing.  This is similar to a wagon wheel going backwards in a movie.  If there are non- linear movements occurring the strobe will pick this up.  It is really good for inspecting the surround to see if it is flexing properly.  You can also see modes occurring on the cone as it ripples from the sound waves and spiders acting funny.  If this technique doesn't catch the problem then you need a scanning laser to digitize the modes.

Sounds like the video is a good job for Brian Rag...

maybe could demo this for us at the Pilgrimage? It'd be especially cool to see a good high quality driver compared to a low quality driver
