Ground Plane Measurements. Very Cool. I Mean, Cold.

Daily Photo

Because the anechoic chamber can effectively measure frequency response down to only about 100Hz or so, we take our bass response measurements out in the elements, as demonstrated by Trey when the temperatures were less than ideal for humans, but ok for speakers.

The test itself never fails to startle me if I happen to be outside and unaware.  It's very reminiscent of an old sound effect used during bombing scenes in a WWII B-movie, except with no explosion at the end (hopefully).  I feel a strong urge to duck and cover.

If you're wondering why it looks like he is measuring a black fuzzy rectangle, that's a sample of my outstanding Photoshop skills attempting to hide the not-yet-announced-super-secret upcoming speaker design.  Good thing I'm not a graphic artist.

Is this a ground plan measurement for the bass on a smallish speaker?  Or a really tiny subwoofer?  I know it's a secret... maybe I'll find out in due time.

I suspect some of those ground plane measurments get downright frightening sounding ... especially when you go really low with the big speakers and monster subwoofers...

Hmmm... hold on a sec ... if this was taken today isn't it about 50 degrees in Indy?  That's not cold (ok, I often get cold when it's below 70) so being from Arkansas I suppose Trey can call 50 cold.

Still wondering what's hidden that we're not allowed to see yet.

It was not taken yesterday--it was a couple weeks ago.  Trust me, it was cold.

And that's a little speaker, not a subwoofer.

Did Trey next test that interesting-looking brown and beige omnidirectional speaker in the background?

Heh!  I guess you could recycle some of the components...  ;^)
