For Grandpa Unger

Daily Photo

Tucked away in the wood shop is this state-of-the art paint room, which I am told is of "automotive-quality."  I also learned that we have a 3' diameter conduit that draws out the fumes.  Fancy!

Looking at this room covered in paint has conjured up images of how fun it would be as an artist to have a room designated for complete destruction in pursue of art.  My grandfather was such an artist, creating portraits and landscapes for nickels, much to the chagrin of my business-minded grandmother.  I loved visiting them as a kid, first in Buffalo, later in St Petersburg, where getting messy for the sake of art was encouraged.  And also where my portrait was done every 5 years or so.  Sitting still was a challenge, but oh so worth it now.

Grandpa "got by" with his unusual career choice, thanks in no small part to grandma's frugality, but he never received the notoriety I'm sure he craved.  He passed away a few years ago, but I guarantee it would give him a thrill to know I was able to find one of his works on the most curious of creations:  The Internet.

Sadly, no.  I just found it yesterday, it was already sold. I'm not sure how it got there--I remember that painting in their house.

Amy - maybe you could post some of Grandpa Ungers portraits of you?  Unless it's too personal.  Sorry you weren't able to purchase your grandfather's painting.

Sure! I have a few of Grandpa's landscapes, and I believe my mom still has a few as well.  Dad has my baby portrait, and I have my 13-year portrait.  Unfortunately, the others have been damaged or lost over the years.  I'll try to get some photos together to share...
