Cash

One of my favorite tunes from childhood is "Ring of Fire" by the late, great Johnny Cash.  When the American series albums were released in the mid-90s through 2002, consisting of mostly cover songs that you wouldn't expect to hear from an old country singer, I was the first in line.  One of the best to come from those efforts was "Hurt," a song originally by Nine Inch Nails.  While it obviously was not written either for or about Cash, he made it his own.  Also one of the best music videos ever.

Cash.  At first I thought this was a contest.... oh, Johnny Cash.

I've never been much of a country music fan yet for a long time have thought I need to get at least a little Johnny Cash in my collection.

Maybe a greatest hits kind of collection some day.

Too much music.  Too little time (and funds).

The Man In Black was truly an American Icon

It was pure genius of Rick Rubin to get Johnny Cash back in the studio for these masterpieces. I've heard that they went in every day and put something down. Cash's elderly gnarled hands resting on the piano at 0:33 into this is a beautiful image. And yeah, the song's true for Trent, Johnny, and thousands like them.

Finally got around to watching the video... very moving and some beautiful images especially the gnarled hands on the piano as Michael mentions.  Very moving performance.

Also read the wiki entry.  Something more to add to my someday list.

Thanks for posting Amy.

We were so fortunate that the American Recordings were made and captured Cash in a way that allowed (at least myself anyway) many to understand the true depth of this unique man/artist.

I will add also that the quality of some of these recordings really can make you feel that he is alive and in front of you as he sings.
