    DTV Converter Boxes

I couldn't find any threads about these things here. So, I want to get one of the digital to analog converter boxes that are going to be required next year for anyone using an old type analog input TV set. I was wondering if anyone knows of anyplace where these things have been tested, compared, rated, etc.?

What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?

    Re: DTV Converter Boxes

I found all sorts of information about the DTV boxes on the site of my local Detroit-area ABC affiliate: WXYZ-TV Channel 7.

Thanks. I'm expecting to need one with no plans for HDTV set.

Don't wait until the last minute to order your discount coupon(s). Right now they are running 2-3 months to get them from the time you place the request.

Most coupons will expire within 90 days of receiving them. Also, not all converter boxes will pass a analog signal.

You only need a Converter box if you are relying on "Over the Air" antenna.  If you have cable or satellite, you don't need one.

    Yeah.

Try to hold out for the ECHOSTAR TR-40. This is suppose to be released late spring/early summer. I hear it will have many more features than the current models.

That's interesting. I'd imagined that they all would be the same. To offer a variety of features for folks who are late to the party hadn't occurred to me.

    Re: DTV Converter Boxes

I sent away for the two coupons for discounts on the boxes months ago and have't heard anything yet.

BTW - digital over the air is fine except when the weather is not perfect, like  when there's a storm. When real tv goes down it's going to put a lot of people without cable or satellite feeds in danger. If there is an approaching storm and your digital signal gets all scrambled, how are the less wealthy going to know how to seek shelter?

    Too bad Colter,

Sounds like your application may have been lost in the mail? My coupons made it here in about 5 weeks.

    Re: DTV Converter Boxes

Yes, I applied before the boxes were available and they said there would be a delay, but the boxes have been out for a couple months now, right?

Better apply again. It was lightly raining last night and over-air digital was nearly unwatchable though. I think this might force everyone to go to cable. The poor who cannot afford the cost of cable will just get left behind. What a shame.

Hurricanes? They take out the cable, the power, etc. The old battery operated AM/FM portable radio comes to mind as the standby. Sorta like a Norman Rockwell scene from the 40's, family gathered around, small fire in fireplace, single candle, little mother clutching kids, father tuning radio, and suddenly, the voice, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself".....

In the kingdom of the blind, the one eyed man is still just the bus driver....
