    IR extender on Quartet

I have a pair of Quartet speakers on the floor, and my receiver/amp and CD player are hidden inside a wood cabinet. I just got a Channel Vision IR-5000 IR extender (http://www.channelvision.com/index/1/1) that will allow me to use the remote controls on the equipment inside the cabinet without opening the door. It's a very nice, brand new, somewhat expensive AV wall unit, so I'd really rather not drill a hole in its cabinet door.

The IR eye has a flushmount option, where the eye can mount press-fit into a 3/4" hole.

Is there any location on the front of a Quartet where I could safely drill a 3/4" hole for an infrared eye without damaging any working components or the acoustic properties of the speaker? I'd also have to drill a corresponding 3/8" hole on the back side of the speaker to fish the eye through. The IR eye is on a 3' cable to the extender module, which it itself the size of a marker, so it can easily stick to the back side of the speaker with double-sided tape.

I'm not sure if IR signals can make it through speaker fabric; I'd have to experiment. However, I could always cut a 3/4" hole in the speaker fabric--then I'd only need a 3/4" hole in the speaker to fish the wire through the back.

    Thanks

I believe there is room there in the speaker.  But the grill cloth is going to be a problem.

On one hand I can see this is a very clever solution except for the violation of the speaker and grill cloth..

Is there not some other place you can sneak in the IR receiver.  Maybe buy a painting of Elvis on black velvet?

Hahaha...no paintings of Elvis in my den. After further sitting in front of said AV wall unit and thinking, I think I'm going to put the eye right under the TV cabinet door. I mean, there's really no way to make it completely invisible, so I'll do the best I can... :-)

IR locations should normally be close to the viewing screen as it is our tendency to 'aim' the remote at the screen (source of all things good and evil) while wishing for a change.

Actually, I was just looking at my Quartets, and I think I found the solution. The bottom four inches of the speaker are actually a hollow wood riser. All I have to do is drill a 3/4" hole in the front of the speaker near the bottom, press-fit the eye, drill a 3/8" hole in the back to run the cable, and I'm done.

I'm going to tape the eye down there first and make sure I get good range...
