    What to do???

Currently I own a pair of SF-1 floorstanding speakers that have provided the audio for my Plasma TV. I bought these a few years back with the intent of building a full 5.1 surround system. I obviously never got around to adding on to the system because I’ve moved a few times and the rooms just didn’t seem to warrant it. Now I’m finally in a place I will be for a while and want to revisit the surround system. Though I don’t have the exact dimensions of the room handy, I would say my room is more on the small to medium sized with my viewing distance from my TV is no more than 15ft. Also, there is no space behind my couch to put satellites on stands but there is about a 10inch ledge where I could sit them. Hanging bookshelf sized satellites is not really an option. My questions: Do I build the surround sound system around the SF-1s? OR Do I replace the SF-1s with a system like the Quintet SL (the smaller satellites are part of the reason I liked the way the system looked)? OR Do I build a system from scratch and if so what should I look into? Keeping it under about $2k is the goal and I can probably drop about $1.2k initially and add on later if needed. Thought and suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks Sorry about the layout. I tried to format this so it was easier to read but cannot get it to not just run on.

Welcome, this is the right place! First please familiarize yourself with floorstanding, bookshelf, and complete systems. A rule of thumb is do it right the first time. So far, I see the F-1's as not commited, as they may, or may not remain with your present plans. What is your % of HT vs. Music? What RX / Amp do you plan on powering system with? Is the F-1's doing the fronts to some good now?Do a search on the entire site for topic/keywords, and you will find archived, good info. that is current with today's products/thoughts, it will help you formulate more specific questions. Stay open and versatile, and you will receive, different opinions to tailor to your taste.

    Thanks!

BTW, you are in an enviable position, so have fun!

man I hate that, makes use all sound fienrdly or some crap.

If you are here the first thing we want to do is push you away from "sattellight" (sp) type speakers.

Look at Reference series or Used stuff. $1200 goes far for used gear. Give us a list of current equiptment owned....   Receivers and such...

As for "surrounds"   Proper placement is to the side of the listening position, a bit above the listener.

Klipsch Reference line, EX.  RF-62 (reference front 6" driver TWO drivers)

Keep in mind a Subwoofer makes all the difference in Movie watching... don't leave it out of the budget..

Does F = Front or F=Floorstanding?  Just curious.

    Re: What to do???

    Thanks for all the responses.

First, it is clear I'm not a huge audiophile.

Second, my speakers are on the discontinued list.  Here's  the link http://www.klipsch.com/products/discontinued/details/sf-1.aspx  and I don't feel I need to keep them as part of the new system.

Third, most of the usage will be for Home Theater in a room that is about 15X15.  My couch is up against the wall opposite the TV.  It is an "L" shaped couch which does not make it easy to add surround speakers to the side.  Smaller surrounds are more what I'm looking for.

Fourth,  the receiver I currently have (Yahama) is not suitable for Video and will need to be upgraded.  I'm looking at a RX-V663 but am not commited to it and it's not part of the overall budget.

Fifth,  it seems like Reference is the way to go but since I don't/wouldn't crank the system up all the time would a system setup like the RF-62 be too much.  I'm interested in a good HT experience but would it be overkill from a sound/price point?

How's this as a potential set up?

RF-52, RC-52, RW-10d, and RS10s.  Too powerful for the room size?  Also, any thoughts on the Yamaha running that setup?

Thanks again for all the input.

    Re: What to do???

I just picked up the Yahama RX-V663 7.1 and really like it.  It runs a pair of KLF-20's, a KLF-C7, KSW-150 sub and a pair of Polk Monitor 70 towers.  My room is 22'x22'x22' with adjacent loft, dining room, entry foyer, sunroom, hallway etc.   It rocks.

Good to know.  It looks like I can get one on eBay for about $350.
