    iFi vs. Promedia 2.1

     Hey everyone,

I've been a big fan of Klipsch products ever since my first Promedia 2.1 system that I bought four or five years ago.  Currently, I own two Promedia 2.1 systems, Image X-10 headphones, Custom 3 headphones, and most recently an iFi system.

I've always considered the Promedias to be some of the best sounding computer speakers....even better than my home stereo system.  I wanted something a bit more powerful, and when I looked into the iFi it seemed just the ticket...higher quality, better sound, larger sub, iPod integration, etc.

The iFi came in a few days ago, I immediately hooked it up and stuck my iPod on the dock and began playing songs.  Literally side by side, I definitely noticed a far more refined upper-end on the iFi vs the Promedia...they were louder, crisper, fuller, etc, as I had expected.  But what surprised me was with the sub at normal (mid) level on the iFi, it was almost weak...especially next to the Promedia, whose sub I usually set to about 8-9 o'clock on the dial for most music.  I turned up the sub on the iFi, and could definitely hear much higher quality and refined bass, but it lacked a significant amount of the punch and power I could get from the Promedia system (although at the expense of some lower end distortion and "port flutter") at the same volume.  Sure, when the system is cranked up, the sub does pretty well - but considering it is at least 50% bigger than the Promedia's sub and has a larger driver, I'm surprised at how relatively "weak" it is (although for most listening purposes it has plenty of bass).

To me it seems as if the iFi's sub is under-amplified or something...not living up to its capability.  I wanted to see what other people thought who are familiar with the iFi and/or Promedia 2.1, as I'm assuming my system is in normal working order. Or possibly if I could get some feedback from Klipsch on this?

By the way, I have indeed tried moving the sub around the room and experimenting with placement...it is consistently outperformed by the power and punch of the Promedia's sub regardless.

     Thanks in advance!

    Keep listening... Big Smile

I can tell you 100% that the iFi sub has more output everywhere than the 2.1 sub.

As strange as it sounds, you must now retrain your ears (brain?) to hear the music with less distortion.  In time you will appreciate the difference.

For a little more puch, move the sub toward the corner of the room.

Andy W, I do sort of see what you mean...so I guess the Promedia 2.1's sub just sounds louder because it really is actually creating distortion?  I definitely feel my walls shaking like an earthquake when playing low-end biased music/movies/etc with the iFi's sub...but it just doesn't sound as boomy as the Promedia's...?

Seems quite possible that in fact it is more powerful but in a bettery way...I will take your suggestion and keep listening!
