I've been thorougly enjoying my Marantz SR7001.  I wanted the 8001 but found a deal too good to pass up on eBay on my 7001.

http://www.accessories4less.com has the 7001 for $499.99 and the 8001 for $699.99.  They are factory refurbished but I've never had a single problem with factory refurb'd items.

+1 on the Marantz, I've been saving for a 6003 to eventually power my RF-62's, and look forward to it.

Honestly, if you spend a little more, the TX-NR905 by Onkyo is a great receiver that is a far better value than a similar priced Marantz.  I bought it new last year for ~$900 and I like it alot.  It's made in Japan, weigh's 54 pounds, has a massive torroidal transformer, seperate transformers for audio and video processing too.  The replacement to it is the TX-NR906, but it is made in Malaysia now.  The TX-NR805 is a great receiver too, much better than the replacement 806.  The TX-NR875 is also a great receiver for the price if you get an ecost deal for ~$600.  Check ecost and similar closeout sites too as I've seen great deals recently such as the 805 for <$400 which is a great deal.
