    Promedia 2.1 sattelite trouble

I've had my Promedia 2.1s for a few years now and love them. Everyone who has ever been to my house and hears me crank them at all (usually no more than 1/3 of usable volume -- that's from my motherboard integrated audio) wants them.

They recently stopped working. I'd had some trouble with the Controller Hub hookup to the sub, but this seems to be a separate issue. The power LED is still on and I still have (potentially muddy and less pronounced) sub output, but nothing from my satellites. To make matters a little more confusing, I can plug headphones into the Controller Hub headphone jack and get full sound.

I read through the forums and didn't see anything like my problem, which worried me. Just in case, I took off the Controller Hub (didn't help). Then I took off the plate on the sub (amp plate?) and the fuses there looked fine. The plate was really hot when I first turned off the sub after noticing that the sattelites had stopped working. Inside, it looked like some glue had been melted all over the place...but didn't especially look abnormal. I can post pictures if anyone would like.

I checked the main fuse on the sub, as well -- it looked fine.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and any advice would be appreciated. I have some 10+ year old altec lansings filling in and they are not cutting it.

    Re: Promedia 2.1 sattelite trouble

Far from an expert on this, but from everything I have read, you might want to revisit the DIN connection to the sub.  MOST, but definitely not all, problems seem to be centered there.  My problem was not the DIN plug, but the actual sub amp board inside on the plate amp's main circuit board.  All fuses were fine, but the sub amp board was dark brown (fuse there was still OK but something on the board had fried).  If you have previously had DIN plug problems I would see if that could be carefully moved around and if it cuts in and out you know that is it.  Also have read where there are boards in the control pod that go bad.

You said the plate was really warm/hot when you removed it.  Look closely at the interior to see if the 3 different amp boards (Sub, L, R) are all the same color or if you see major discoloration anywhere on the main circuit board.  Cannot tell you how to fix it other than send it to Klipsch along with $75 and you will get back a working plate amp.  No telling how long that plate amp will last.  See this thread for what I did with mine.

    Thanks for the advice!

Sorry I took so long to reply. I actually got into a car accident the day of your reply and have been super busy car shopping and the likes since then.

I will more thoroughly check the DIN as you suggest, and also inspect the sub amp board for discoloration and then update this post.

Wow...hope I can get it fixed b/c $75 is pretty steep...and I'm sure the shipping will not be cheap on that sucker, either.

Thanks again for the advice. Help is greatly appreciated!

    Pictures

Another member (thanks, slideways03) had the same problem as me and contacted Klipsch. Important information others might find useful is as follows:

[quoted from an email from slideways03]
"They had no doubt that it was the onboard amp that went bad. I now have to ship the plate to them so they can replace the amp. They charge a flat rate of $75 for the repairs and shipping back to you. You have to pay shipping fees to send it to them. Just wanted to pass that info along to you. The customer Service number is 1-888-554-5665"

I had already taken pictures and wanted to post them. I only see one capacitor(?) that looks obviously corroded and some glue(?) that is melted all over the place. I took an excessive number of pictures...but I thought too many was better than too few. Most of us aren't paying for bandwith yet, anyway...[just kidding...i downsized them first]

I will probably end up sending this off...but will likely hold on to it for a few weeks in case someone else cares to share some knowledge with myself and any others who could be helped. The strangest thing to me is that the bass seems fine...I thought it was muddy sounding, but I think I'm just not used to hearing nothing but the sub...was working on it today to take the pictures and it just sounded like neighbors a couple of houses down were having a party...

    Thanks everyone for looking!

    Re: Pictures

I have a Promedia 2.1 bought from less than truthful nutjob on eBay... bunt satellite "bass" drivers on arrival.  The "bass" drivers in both satllites fried - I think I can now identify the smell of a burnt voice coil.

Stupid me... the ad sounded kind of flaky - note to self - no bidding on eBay late at night / early the next morning.  Especially when the ad reads as flaky as this one did.

Stupid me get new "bass" drivers and wire them up... excessive hum and quickly fried one of the new "bass" drivers.  Doh!  Same stench when I opened the box. I think it was $60 to fix the sub back then.  Probably should have.  Would've maybe had about the cost of a new one or a bit less.  The sub rumbles and the headphone jack on the amplifier works fine.

The worst thing was Klipsch was later selling some new Star Wars versions that went for less than what I'd have in this if/when I'd have it repaired and were later on sale locally for not much more than I have in this one now.

May have to try the find a smallish subwoofer amp approach though I'd think the built in would sound better with crossover and eq maybe for the system.  But in any case I need at least one sattelite "bass" driver.

But I'm confident if I replace the satellite drivers and have the amplifier repaired it would work fine for a couple of years at least.  That said it might be less expensive to just find a used one or try the plate amp idea.
