Hmmm, even when the market was in a better state you would have been hard pressed to get $1850 for them. Not to dampen your sale....but there are a few nice pairs out there that are not even selling for $850. Best of luck with your sale.

1988 not 1985. Does not make them worth any more though. Thanx for offering them here and good luck with your sale.

I don't live very far away and I would love to have another pair, actually I would like three more, so I could have 5 for HT.

But I would not be willing to pay that much.  I think you would be lucky to get even $1000.00

Those are nice. Real nice.  But they are not true veneer and are priced very close to real-veneered Klipschorns.

Hey - , Thanks everyone - I appreciate the appraisal and positive criticism.

I think the communitys right that these are priced too high - will update the 'asking for' price tomorrow (Tuesday).

Good luck very nice speakers. I wouldn't sell my big klipsch speakers in this market. It is the time to buy not sell.

I'm having a hard time with the concept of buying audio gear anytime as an investment. I don't care what the market is, nothing depreciates faster IMHO. Buy when you want and sell when you don't. Thats the reality of it. I just don't think there is a profit in storing speakers in any market.Wink

Yeah, I get that sense.  I did see a few La Scalas after some searching here in the forums which weren't as nice, but sold at 1250 or so.  My original price was based on that...

..but, with the existing market, etc, and my folks need to make space, time to sell.

Also: I noticed that the reason for selling in the first post was empty.  The reason for selling: These were my uncle-in-law's speakers - he was a *serious* audiophile, so I know that they were well taken care of.  He passed away in 2002, and my folks are selling them to make space in their house.

Aren't those factory stained in walnunt and lacquered?  So birch plywood, the outer layers consisting of nice birch veneer?  Obviously not as desirable as Walnut veneer but they have real wood veneer if I'm not mistaken.

That was my best understanding from doing some research on the forums here.  There's a post that talks about Klipsch using (2) different acronyms around "W" and "B" "S" "W", etc...so I found it a bit confusing, really.

    WLS = Walnut Laquer Stained

They are the standard birch cabinets that you would have with a -BR code, but then stained and laquered.  You can tell that they have the exposed plys on the edges...just stained at the factory...probably back in the day a price compromise between straight raw and having to pay for the extra veneer. So... Less than veneer but a premium over regular.  The fact that they were finished at the factory means something.

Re: 1985 Klipsch "Las Scala" Speakers (Original Pair) Vintage, Excellent Condition

Just to clarify a few things:

Birch plywood has a "real wood" outer veneer, it's just not a "fancy" real wood veneer. This plywood was originally intended for critcal structural applications, not typically for fine furniture. The original LaScalas were designed as utility speakers and virtually all of them were made with birch plywood (raw or painted black) rather than fancy veneers. After the speaker became somewhat popular for home audio applications, Klipsch made more cosmetic options available like grills on the top horns and factory stained cabinets.

The newer LaScala II is a cosmetically and structurally enhanced speaker, with fancy veneers and heavier construction. The II is essentially the replacement for the Belle Klipsch (which was the cosmetically enhanced version of the original LaScala). The original LaScala is a very nice speaker but is not in the same league sonically, cosmetically, or pricewise as the LaScala II.

In doing your research you may have missed this thread:

    http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/t/110425.aspx?PageIndex=1

The speakers in the above link are 1986 LaScalas in virtually the same trim and condition as yours. The seller originally asked $1350 when she posted last October and requested local pick-up in the Seattle area. This was before the economy had tanked completely. The speakers didn't sell until 5 months later and the seller had to ship them in order to find a buyer. I don't know what the final selling price was, but you could ask the seller. Also the seller had the original boxes for the speakers and all packing material, which adds value and makes packing for shipping easier (although the factory packing needs to be fortified for shipping these days).
