RB 51's and Rear Firing Ports

RB 51's and Rear Firing Ports

I am upgrading my home theater and need a bit of advice. We have an 8’ deep storage room behind the front wall of our home theater. I plan to upgrade the front and middle speakers and build the TV and speakers into the wall. Had pretty much decided to go with RB-51s for the front speakers but then saw they had rear firing ports. Not really sure what this is but... Will these speakers work in an enclosed cabinet? I think my options are to: (1) go with the 51’s and enclose the speakers in a cabinet; 2) go with the 51’s and leave the back of the cabinet open so the rear is open to the storage room; 3) upgrade to RB-61s, which have front firing ports? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

being rear ported means obviously means that the port fires in the rear of the speaker. will this affect sound in your enclosed space? very much so. will this affect sound if you had them open in the rear to another room? very much so again. if i were you and you had the space i would upgrade to the rb-61 and you can flush mount them with the rear closed and they will sound just fine. plus i have read that they are quite an upgrade over the 51's for a minimal price.

Agreed with Scrappydue, get the RB-61's and dont look back, they are a great set of speakers, i just sold mine to Scrappydue, he will love them for the Rears.

Will you be trying to find a used older pair or get the newer generation ones? If so make sure you don't pay retail for them. They can be had for 400$ with a phone call to the right dealer!
