Speaker hook up ( Wire )

    What’s the Best way?
    1:Bare wire
    2:Banana plugs
    3:Unknown
I have the kg3.5 and they don't take banana plugs so would i need to replace the fittings and would it make that much difference. I have small gold pin type connectors right now on #12 wire

IMHO anytime you can avoid an unsoldered connection you should. So, banana plugs are only a convenience, not an improvement in any way to the electrical aspects of the connection.

Tin the ends of all your hookup wire to avoid corrosion and make the fewest and tightest mechanical connections you can.

Har d to imagine why not? Bare copper corrodes at an unbelievably fast rate - like in a matter of days. I can't imagine corroded copper is a better connection than tin -- but hey, I learn something new here everyday!

Could you elaborate on the "tinning" process please? Is that a special kind of solder? Thanks

I have soldered the wires directly to the speaker outputs with silver solder. I tin the connections going to my reciever for better contact also. Make sure that you do not have a weak solder connection as the speaker will cut out intermittantly. You can check your connections with a multimeter from the reciever end.

Silver solder? Doesn't that take a lot of heat?

Regular light guage "60/40" solder sold at RatShack is fine. Use a 35W or so iron. Dip the bare copper wire in some soldering flux, heat the end of the wire and apply solder to the WIRE (not to the tip of the iron). Voila, done. Won't corrode, easier to feed into the various terminal clips and plugs, etc.
