    Temptation                                               CD

    Shelby Lynne

    1993 Morgan Creek Records

    Amazon.com
Only after leaving Nashville did Shelby Lynne reinvent herself as a soulful R&B singer. During her Music City days of the early '90s, she gained critical raves that didn't translate into wider success. One reason was this fetching 1993 Nashville-produced album of big-band Western swing, produced by Brent Maher, which appeared long before the words swing revival crossed anyone's lips. It revealed Lynne's assets in a stronger showcase than her earlier Epic recordings. She's radiant and sensual on the torchy "Little Unlucky at Love," but the uninhibited swing tunes, including her explosive performance of the title number, defined the album. She maintained that finger-popping momentum with "Some of That True Love" and "The Rain Might Wash Your Love Away." Lynne turned seductress on "Tell Me I'm Crazy" and honky-tonker on "I Need a Heart to Come Home To," the album's most overtly country number. Now that Lynne's gained wider exposure, it's worth remembering that pushing the envelope is nothing new for her. --Rich Kienzle

    Harvest Moon                                                    CD

    Neil Young

    1992 Reprise Records

Both artistically and stylistically HARVEST MOON is the successor to HARVEST, Neil Young's landmark acoustic album from 1971, which featured the No. 1 single, "Heart Of Gold."

The song "Harvest Moon" was nominated for a 1994 Grammy Award ...    Full Descriptionas "Record Of The Year."

The song "Harvest Moon" was nominated for a 1994 Grammy Award as "Song Of The Year."

Neil Young's sequel to 1972's HARVEST found him reuniting with the Stray Gators and inviting along a few other famous friends. Unlike Crazy Horse's sonic bludgeoning, the Gators' light playing featured ethereal-sounding pedal steel and harmonies that caressed like a gentle lover. This was the perfect compliment for Young's songwriting, which was fueled by romantic notions of courtship and deep thought. Young and Nicolette Larson harmonized and became the lovers of "You and Me," whereas Jack Nitzsche's string arrangements made for a nice contrast in "Such a Woman," a bold-faced declaration of love. Other insights into the normally cranky iconoclast's sentimental side include the delicate touch of the title track, which leaves an image of slow-dancing in a dark corner.

Fast approaching 50, Neil Young also used HARVEST MOON to reflect back on his life, particularly in the biographical "One of These Days," and "From Hank to Hendrix," a twangy sequel to "My My, Hey Hey (Out of The Blue)." Young also continued his commitment to the environment by including both a protest against man's destruction of nature ("War of Man") and a live tribute to the forest and jungles recorded at a Portland, Oregon performance that included sounds of the Brazilian rainforest ("Natural Beauty.")

Certified platinum 1992 album arranged by Jack Nitzsche and featuring background singers Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor. 10 tracks. Reprise.

As some of you already know, I highly recommend this album........Yes

    Just A Little Lovin'                                   CD

Shelby Lynne  Inspired by Dusty Springfield

    2008 Lost Highway Records

    Amazon.com
It's a risky move for any singer to attempt a direct ascent on the towering peaks of Dusty Springfield's evergreen legacy. (Rolling Stone once called Dusty in Memphis the third most "essential" rock album by a woman.) Just a Little Lovin' achieves the unlikely: a tribute to an immortal artist which both glorifies its subject and elevates the worshipper kneeling at her altar. Lynne's 2001 breakthrough, I Am Shelby Lynne, was both utterly fresh and nostalgically infused with a Memphis-like spirit. Much of Just a Little Lovin' is as familiar as an old pair of shoes. Lynne's original contribution, "Pretend," fits snugly between the classics, but it's the loose, practically improvised vibe of this recording that breathes new life into Bacharach and David's "Anyone Who Had a Heart" and, especially, Randy Newman's "I Don't Want to Hear It Anymore." Genius producer Phil Ramone lends the entire collection the kind of intimacy he brought to Paul Simon and Billy Joel's most atmospheric 1970s recordings. Restrained instrumentation--often simply guitar, upright bass, a sprinkling of piano, and light percussion--turn even the teenage bubble-gum anthem "I Only Want to Be with You" into a sultry meditation. It's hard to imagine another recent album more successful in melding retro-reverence with contemporary moderation. The result arouses emotion even as it enchantingly relaxes. --Ben Heege

    World Without Tears                                       CD

    Lucinda Williams

    2003 Lost Highway Records

    Amazon.com
Most artists who appeal to adult listeners tend to settle into a comfortable niche, but Lucinda Williams refuses to play it safe. Instead, her music stings like an open wound, as she continues to strip away the protective layers from her art's emotional core. Though Williams has long been prized for the naked honesty of her music, this collection is even rawer than its predecessors. From the down-and-dirty bar-band blues of "Atonement" to the Rolling Stones-style swagger of "Bleeding Fingers" to the tricky balance of debasement and transcendence in "Ventura," Williams leaves the nerve endings of her music exposed. With the band opting for first-take immediacy rather than polish, some of the most powerful material is also the neediest, as the singer addresses lovers who have disrespected her ("Righteously") or abandoned her ("Those Three Days," "Minneapolis"). Though her attempts at rap on "Sweet Side" and "American Dream" might cause diehard fans to wince, her willingness to take creative chances reaffirms her position at the vanguard of a rootsy progressivism that transcends musical category. Simply put, there's more Patti Smith in her than there is Patsy Cline. --Don McLeese

    Tea For The Tillerman                                  CD

    Cat Stevens

    1970/2000 A&M Records

    Amazon.com essential recording
Cat Stevens tends to be lumped in with the early-'70s singer-songwriter school led by James Taylor and Carole King, but he actually fits in rather neatly with such wistful English contemporaries as Nick Drake, Syd Barrett, and Donovan. Tea for the Tillerman's "Wild World," "Into White," and "Longer Boats" indicate that he may have been a more gifted tunesmith than the lot of them. As with the best of the Brit folk-rockers, Stevens mixed melancholy with whimsy. Yes, he was prone to airy platitudes, but when he harnessed his eccentricities, as he did throughout this 1970 masterwork, you had something truly distinctive. A natural cult artist, à la Tim Buckley and Leonard Cohen, Stevens connected with record-buyers to the tune of 25 million units sold before he changed his name to Yusuf Islam, established an Islamic school, and raised a ruckus by supporting Ayatollah Khomeini's death decree against author Salman Rushdie. This remastered 2000 version of the 1970 recording, which was overseen by the artist, is a vast improvement over the earlier CD reissue. --Steve Stolder
