What we have here is the mating of honey and molasses. Or is it the sound of melted butter over gravel? Never mind--sweeter, more joyous music has never been recorded (although the follow-up, Ella and Louis Again, may be even better). You can't listen to these two without smiling. It's such an inevitable pairing that you wonder what titanic forces of nature could have kept Ella and Satchmo apart until they made this record together in 1957, accompanied by the Oscar Peterson trio and Buddy Rich on drums. The songs are standards--extraordinary standards, of course, like "Moonlight in Vermont" and "A Foggy Day"--but nirvana is reached on "Cheek to Cheek." Heaven. --Jim Emerson

Yeah, I got my life back with the knee replacement, and even with all the rain I was able to get 15K miles in on the motorcycles. Also got to the Newport Jazz festival again this summer. It was perfect weather and not as hot as it usually is, so it was great.

But I miss this place.. nice to see all the great music in this thread still going!

I took my wife to the mall the other day. Parked in a parking lot next to an older Nissan Maxima with the greatest bumper sticker. It said "It's not that I'm old", "It's that your music really does suck"

I looked down at his front passenger seat and there was a shoebox full of CDs, with this one on top.

 Hey, that looks like a Valkyrie in your avatar pic.  Currently in between bikes but recently sold a vulcan 1500fi, vstar 1100 prior to that.

 OK, nice news Steve and Dennie, sorry to see the Vulcan go...  What is in its place ? Friend of mine just bought a brand new Raider (big motor!) 

Well, you both slid off topic into my OTHER favorite hobbie.  So, I present a photo of the newest toy (and a fair shot of me with it for the curious  ) 

Steve, I just rode with a couple of friends, one new fellow from Boston that has never been up on Greylock... So, last Sunday we went, had a blast.

Have 1500 miles on the new horse so far...(a muscle cruiser)   Runs great, and if you toodle around in 5th gear alot, I have hit an amazing 50mpg !  For a 1500cc bike weighing in at 724lbs wet - its remarkable..........same mpg as my 2007  800 weighing 300 LESS!

Anyway, been watching all of your music choices as usual, but have not had much time to spin my mmf 5.1 in a few days.  I NEED to get back to that, but alas, a short trip up to Ontario for a few days coming up, so it will be quiet around the house while I am away.   

WILL bring the laptop, and I should be able to still see your great posts!

It is a Valkyrie. 1998, that I bought new in a crate in 2001 as a leftover. It now has 89K miles on it and runs perfect.

A better picture. is below. When I ride this, I always ride with my "Regulation Mootorcycle Music" in my headset. One such album depicted here. As I do the convert to .mp3 and suck into onto my memory stick.

Time to be looking for a replacement ride.

Used Valkyries are going cheap and they are still one of the nicest bikes on the road today. The got character and soul. The big Suzukis, and Yamahas are nice too, but stay away from the 2010 HDs, 07-09s are the better choice, the 2010s got cats in the exhaust pipes and run hotter than is good for the engines.

But to keep on topic, I'm also going to have this on the earphones in a short bit. It's cold here so I'll be wired with Gerbing jacket/gloves/pant liners and socks to stay toasty.

Tom Waits pulled off a neat trick with the 1983 release of Swordfishtrombones: he disengaged himself from the present (and his own recent achievements) and allied himself with the past. And yet no one could accuse him of becoming mired in nostalgia. A decade before the phrase lo-fi gained favor, Waits purposely ravaged his songs by stomping them into peculiar shapes and utilizing arcane instruments and recording techniques to further bend them into new kinds of aural sculptures. These pretty/ugly tracks provide a riveting view of Tom's wild years.
