I recently bought the Quintet III series with the sub-10 synergy sub-woofer.

I have an entry-level Harmon Kardon receiver (which doesn't have a ton of power or features, but I don't really need them, I have basic hook ups and it's a small room).

I am really impressed with the sound, but I am one of these that is constantly 'tweeking' to find that perfect match of sub crossover/volume setting and placemnt, sattelite crossover, etc.

For a relatively small room (most distances from listening position to the speakers are 10 feet) and a H/K high-current receiver, what would be the suggested (general, I know every room is different) crossover settings?  I read in one entry (and saw on CNET.COM) they had gone as hight as 150, but I do agree (with the other poster) that this seems a little high.  I am now at 110 I think which seems to work, is that advisible for these speakers or should I go lower?  Also, the sub is placed in a pretty good spot but seems a bit boomy ... if I go to lower crossover setting (on the sub) and put the gain around half-way would that fix it?  Or is my placement maybe the issue (for the 'boominess').

 Any help will be GREATLY appreciated ... again I do love the sound from such small speakers.  I think these are 10 times better than BOSE (and cheaper).

I too purchased a Quintet III Microsystem and am using my existing Velodyne CHT-8 sub. I also purchased a new Yamaha HTR-5960 receiver to replace my 5 year old Onkyo the had limited crossover settings. The Yamaha has an auto setup using a mic to make various speaker settings, check wiring and set the crossover. IMO it worked very well. It set the crossover at 120Hz, the speakers to small and was very accurate with the speaker distances. I have received very good suggestions about increasing the crossover. My next setting above 120 is 160 so I have manually set the crossover to 160Hz (actually back and forth to see what I think sounds better). Prior to this set up I had Definitive bi-polar tower speakers and center speaker with small satellite surround speakers I had for 10 years. I just wanted to make a change to a smaller system and have always liked the reputation of Kilpsch so I read about the Quintet III on the internet, was able to hear them at Best Buy, really liked what I saw and heard and purchased them .I am not disappointed. And...a high current amp makes a lot of difference IMO.

Thank you, I appreciate the feedback.  I am still modifying to try and obtain the best settings.  I think 120 for the crossover seems about right.  For the low-pass (on the sub) I keep changing my mind, I think I prefer it around half-way (which I think is about 80 mhz).  I really prefer the 'punchier' bass sounds as oppossed to the more higher end bass so this might work best.  If anyone has any other suggestions, please let me know.  Thanks again!!

120Hz point with the Quintets sounds about correct. I have the first Quintets and they work great with a 120Hz crossover point,sub being a Sunfire D-8,good match. Used as a desktop PC speaker system.

 

As for B0$e...they would be ok if priced at 1/10th of the retail they try to push them at.
