Image S4 cable guide split open after a month of use

This has really been bugging me. Doesn't seem like a part that should have failed so soon, since I've never had this problem before.

Is this considered a defect or am I screwed?

Defective Custom-2's (twice!)

Hi there,

I recently ordered the Klipsch Custom-2's and liked them very much. They are my first IEMs and I really like their warm sound and superior comfort.

However, my first pair broke down (the right earphone's plastic element, on which the tip sits, came off while changing tips) a week after I bought them.Thinking this was a faulty pair, I exchanged them for a new pair which seemed to work fine for a few weeks but now, after 3 weeks, the right earphone has gone mute.

Fortunately, it is still within the 30 day period so I can return them. However, I really like the custom 2's but I am a little hesitant to order another pair since durability is one of my main concerns. (I ordered them from one of the reputed online dealers: TigerDirect)

Has anybody else had a similar experience ? Any Custom-2 owners care to comment on their experience ?

ps : I used them for about 3-4 hours a day (normal use under normal work conditions)

Image S4 Too Loud, Are X10 and X5 Quieter?

I'm noticing that even when I have my iPhone or iPod Nano on their lowest volume level, my Image S4's still seem quite loud. I've also noticed that my Custom-1's are almost as loud too. I'm assuming this has to do with the sensitivity and impedance levels of these headphones.

Are there any options for dealing with this problem?

Additionally, I like the Custom-1's mid-centered sound over the darker signature of the S4, but I find that the S4 design is much more comfortable and easier to get a seal with. Therefore, I'm considering buying either the X10 or X5 to replace the S4. However, I'm worried that I might have the same problem of loud volume with the X10 or X5. I noticed that the X10 and X5 have a higher impedance (50-ohm) than the S4 (18-ohm).

Would this allow the X10 and X5 to be used at lower volumes than my S4?

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Custom IEM's being discontinued?

I just looked on the "Klipsch Store" and noticed none of the custom line of IEM's are available for purchase. Wondering of Klipsch is discontinuing them?

I've had my custom-2s for a good three months now, and I was being lazy, so I didn't re-adjust the flex wires everytime I used them. Imagine my surprise when I got a free sound quality upgrade the other day =P The problem is, the right bud seals well with both the medium and double flange, but the left bud is only adequate with both.

My ear canals can be different widths and lengths right? So short of customs, I won't ever get a better fit =/ It's listenable, but sort of annoying the I can't squeeze out every bit of sound quality my custom-2s can offer . I've tried angling it upward, doesn't help the seal. Also, the left bud doesn't sit flush inside my ear. Any other suggestions? I'm currently trying to mix and match to see if I can have a different tip on each side.

Klipsch Custom 3 Issues

Hi Guys,

I have a pair of custom 3 headphones. They're quite possibly the best pair of headphones i've ever had and I enjoy them a lot. I have however been having a lot of issues with the cable. I'm actually on my second pair, there seems to be this phenomenon where there are micro breaks in the cloth outer housing and the wire inside tends to bulge through these breaks, this seems to cause an extraordinary amount of stress on the cable and it breaks. Withe first pair, it took about 3 months for this to happen (i bought the head phones in april of this year and I had to return them in June) and I got this set in July and it's as if right on schedule 3 months later the same issue has happened again. I've lost the left channel already, the exact same thing happened. I'm almost at my wits end because i truly love these head phones. Should I just return them under the warranty and get a new pair of the custom 3's or should i get something different?

Any advice you can give is very much appreciated.

Why s-size eartips not supplied with IMAGE S4

I bought S4 and I was shocked ,

where are the small size eartips

and after seeing the contents on the box realized that s-size won't come with S4

new small eartips costs nearly 10 dollars , I could not understand why s-size eartips are not supplied with IMAGE S4 ,

Tried double flange but it tickles :)

am very sad :(

How loud is too loud for headphones?

Article brings up an interesting point.

"The Commission said that at 80 decibels, exposure should be limited to 40 hours a week. At 89 decibels, exposure should not exceed five hours a week."

Now, compare the stock iPod headphones to my X10's and even Custom 1's at the same volume position is pretty great.

This maybe a Prof Thump question....

So, my X10's are rated at 110db SPL/mW @ 50 ohms vs same the 108db SPL/mW @ 32 ohms of the C1's. Trying to lookup the spec's on my iTouch, and I can't find what it provides to the headphones. I have a HeadAmp Pico, and the specs are 0.7Wrms w/32 ohm load. To me using the X10's on this vs the iTouch, well, pretty different (much fuller sound, better bass) I don't use it all the time, as it's not convient for me to carry around when using the subway/commuting.

How loud is too loud? Granted I listen a level which I can sustain for a long period of time, but my level does vary from say morning train ride in as background music for me to sleep, vs actual listening, vs me cranking it for a few songs.

So, how loud is to loud to listen? What is 80 or 89 dB really like in the ears? How do I know if my comfort level of extended listening is say 90-95? I hate to say the that great noise isolation of the headphones hurts in determinging this, as I feel it plays tricks on me. Especially when commuting I feel I need to turn it up to get more bass impact vs sitting at home in a quiet room.

Just food for thought.

Image S4i - sound great but hurt like hell!

Hi there, I've just bought a pair of image S4is but am having a fair bit of trouble getting them to fit comfortably.

The only tips i can seem to fit into my ears are the small, and small double-flanged (double flanged seem to go in easiest), but neither are by any means easy to get in. I've finally managed to get them in reliably (upside down no less!), but after only a few minutes, my ear canals are pretty sore, and are sensitive to movement. Even moving my jaw up and down causes pain in my ears! This would lead me to believe they might be in too far, but i cant pull them out any farther without breaking the seal... I'm stuck here. They sound great, but there's no way I can wear these when they hurt this much! Any suggestions??

My girlfriend gave me S4 today morning ,

the oval eartip seals perfectly to her ear [M size] ,

but none of the eartips seals perfectly to my ear , L size just seals 90 % ,

I need to buy round eartips , i saw that klipsch dont make round eartips ,

so which company earphone eartips will be suitable for klipsch S4 [L size]

I need similar to L size but it should be round ,

I have purchased comply foam for my previous brand earphones but i never felt comfortable

your help and relies would be much helpful kk

Klipsch X5 with a iphone G3

The reviews say that the sound of the X5 is superior to the sound via the S4i.

My traveling device is an iphone G3.

The X5 is without a mic.

When listening on the iphone via an X5 and a call is received:

1. Disconnect the X5 and speak into phone, is that it?

2. when driving - replace the X5 with a mic device?

I'm I missing something- are there other scenarios?

S4i remote doesn't work at all i=on 2nd gen iPod Touch

I just received my Klipsch Image S4i's from Amazon.com and plugged them into my 32 gb 2nd generation iPod Touch. They sound great but the remote does absolutely nothing. None of the controls do a thing. Before I return them, does anybody have a suggestion? Am I missing something?

I'm running the latest version of iTunes and am really bummed out over this.

Image X5, Image X10, or Custom-3?

I'm pretty much torn between the three. I've read a lot of reviews but still can't decide. Price is not a factor as I can get the Custom-3 and X5s for $99 and the Image X10s for $129 at Ultimate Electronics. If anyone has listened to all three, which set of headphones would you reccomend?

Hello fellow Klipschers ,

After a slight break from audio I have decided to try(buy) the finest headphones and earplugs made. Last night I purchased FIVE "earplug" type units(Klipsch X-10,Image-3,Shure530,Grado GR8 and Sennheiser IE-),the UE 11 are custom so it may take a few weeks before I post my review.

I will be also doing a comparo of full size headphones( Sennheiser HD600/650/800,Grado SR125/225/325/RS1/ PS1000, Denon AH-D5000/7000, AKG 701/702 and maybe one or two more upscale units from the known players).That will come in december. For reference I use my Headroom MAX headphone amp as well as the Grado dual 9V cell powered amp and a class A Creek unit.

So far from the preliminary listening I can tell the in ear units offer stellar midrange reproduction at the expense of deep bass performance(save for two units that do quite well). For monitoring a few of these in ear headphones are superb,as long as the source does not contain very low frequency content.I have for refrence also five pairs of powered studio monitors from Genelec,Focal,Dynaudio,Adam and Yamaha.

Sound cards used are the MOTU 828mk3 and RME Fireface 400 plus I have my Creative X-Fi Fatality (general gaming card).I have also the Presonus Monitor Station and Central Station/remote (switchers for monitors,inputs).

I will start posting next week my observations, no favoritism here ...if it sounds great I will post about it. If I can hear faults I will report. One thing is a given , all the in ears have audible limitations(these do not distract as they are near the bottom of the frequency spectrum),all range from very good to stellar in the vocal range and upper registers.Insulation contributes to the clean sound as outside noise(even in a quiet room) is reduced . I have not head the UE 11 as I said I should get these in my mitts in a few weeks,and from what i have read i am expecting a near sonic miracle (the price is clearly over a grand with the custom fitting).

I will post a few preliminary pics shorthly...

Almost no bass response on Image S4

I've had my headphones for about two weeks and they've been great up until yesterday-they had great sound, from low to high. But yesterday I noticed that the bass became almost nonexistent. I tried both other headphone tips and they didn't help. I messed with the equalizer on my iPod and computer, and neither helped. Does anyone have any last-resort things to try before returning them? Thanks!

A few questions about the C3

I called up my local Ultimate Electronics to see if they had the Image X10s in stock. Turns out they don't right now but I need a new set of headphones soon. (I found out Ultimate Electronics is a Klipsch authorized seller and I can buy a 2 year warranty after the Klipsch one is up with UE for just $25). My first question is: how long can you wear the Custom 3's before they start to feel uncomfortable? Also, since I am by no means an audiophile, do you think I could decifer a gigantic difference in sound between the Image X10s and the C3s? And my final question is: is it really hard getting a good seal with the C3s, because that's kind of detering me from getting them over the X10s. Right now I'm leaning towards the X10s but am strongly considering the C3s.

Do earphones cause headaches? Maybe it's just in my head (pun intended)?

Is the Army Air Force Exchange Service considered an authorized dealer? I have ordered a pair of Klipsch Image X10s from their website, and after seeing how many strain relief issues people are having, I want to know if they are still covered by the warranty.

I have ruled out the X5's just because of how big they are. I now am trying to decide between the Custom 3s and Image X10s. A few things that are important to me:

-Comfort - I'll be wearing them sometimes for hours at a time.

-Durability - I'll be carrying my headphones in my pocket sometimes without them being in the carrying case and need headphones where the cable won't start to deteriorate after less than a year of use. Don't get me wrong - I will treat them with extreme care, I just want them to be able to withstand being without the carrying case when I carry them with me.

-Sound quality is pretty important but honestly, I don't think I would be able to pick apart the sounds of the two headphones, considering my previous pairs of headphones have been $50 or less.

Based on these 3 things, which would be the best for me?

Klispch Image X10 First Impressions & S4 comparison

So far I have spent one full day with the X10. Some people say burn-in is a myth, but I don't think so. Maybe it's my ears adjusting, or maybe it's the earphones diaphragm settling in. I'm not sure how all that works, but I can say I've noticed a difference from first listen to 24 hours later with continuous burn-in.

I used the medium tips that are already packaged with it. I tried a variety of them, and the regular medium tips were the most comfortable. The bi-flanges are too uncomfortable in my ear.

First Listen My source was my iPhone 3GS with all music formatted in Apple Lossless. I was listening to Rock/Classic Rock/Alternative/Acoustic & Live performances. I wasn't very impressed with them. They reminded me of the Shure SE530. Highs seemed a bit rolled off, and they didn't have that clarity that I like. The soundstage didn't seem that great either. I enjoyed my Image S4's much more.

Second Listen My source was my Apple Mac Pro tower playing with all music formatted in Apple Lossless. I was listening to Rock/Classic Rock/Alternative/Acoustic & Live performances. I had the X10 plugged into my Apogee Duet headphone amplifier. WOW, big difference in sound. The apogee duet is extremely bright in nature. So it made the X10's a little too bright, but it increased the width of the sound stage.

Almost 24 Hours Later I'm still using the Mac Pro and Apogee Duet combination, and listening as I type this novice review/impression. The soundstage seems to have improved, and detail is more apparent. They are really starting to bloom. I don't find these to be overly bassy at all, but just right. Although, I'm still not getting the crisp clarity I was hoping for. Don't get me wrong, they are still very detailed. The bass does not seem to veil the detail; but the detail seems a bit rolled off. I'm not feeling that click-ity warmish "shrill" vibration when an acoustic guitar is being strum, that gets me that ear-gasim that I get with full sized Grado headphones. To really enjoy the X10 optimally, you need a headphone amp.

So far, straight out of the iPhone 3GS, I enjoy the S4i much more. It has a thick boomy bass, but it still perserves a decent amount of clarity in the details. The S4 is not more detailed than the X10, but the clarity is better on the S4 so far. The S4 has a more fun sound. It will get you moving. But the X10 is slowly growing on me. I really want to try the X5, but the fact that the bass is much less than the X10, has me worried, because I find the X10's bass just right. Anything less may seem a bit empty.

One more thing to consider. My apogee duet is an extremely bright amp. So it is somewhat ill suited for the X10. It tends to reduce the bass resposne a bit. I can't really give an accurate thorough impression as far the sound with ampage. The apogee duet is supposed to be an amazing dac; but I have been using the built-in headphone amp to get by while I'm deciding on an amp.

The combination of comfort and sound quality, I would rank the X10 above the Shure SE530. While I know the sound will improve on the X10, I have a feeling the X5 is my calling. It was recommended to me by almost everyone to get the X5, but I got the X10 unused, for significantly less than what the X5 retails for.

I find the S4 /S4i more comfortable and easier to slip in and out of my ear. The sound quality is amazing for the price. You will not find anything better in its class. It is absolultely hands down the best value for your money. And it seems to have a solid build quality to it, as well.
