Haha, in my defense I don't feel bad that I was dragged to a concert way past my bedtime and probably slept through most of it, however on the flip side if I recall the story, the three tier act included Janet Jackson and Tone Loc (I think Tone Loc was the headliner...WTF?) I wish I remembered seeing more of that Control era Janet Jackson though...probably slept through that on the lawn too.

It only works well if you're close to being on pitch....the further off you go, the worse it gets. I don't think there's much hope for the majority of karaoke...a volume envelope would probably work better.

I have been told by my family I saw Milli Vanilli in concert at Summerfest in Milwaukee in the mid 80's when I was a kid...feels kinda dirty haha

Ace--It must have taken years of therapy just to get you to the point of being able to type that.

That has more to do with the fact that talking is quieter than singing, so you're no longer up into the knee of the compressors. That, and all the effects are turned off. The dry mix is EQ'd so that the dry+wet yields the desired sound...pull the effects off and the dry has EQ compensating for the wet that isn't there anymore.

Yes auto pitch is used everywhere...On comericials, on cd's, in concert. Big Deal?? Nope...

A singer dancing around on stage sings over the vocals if the signal is strong enough it over rides the main track vocals. If not, or if the sound man feels it is sub standard (Singer is sick, vocals suck, just can't hit the high notes anymore that night, the vocal track over rides it.) Now you know the real secret!!

Usually, a few songs are always live. Sometimes it is really apparant when the singer talks between songs...LOL But every singer has a signature sound with certain identifiable effects as well. Think of every Sting, Paul McCartney, Seal, Genisis, Clapton, etc etc or who ever is your favorite vocalist "sound" if it is unique they keep that their whole life. And the secret to that combination of effects and the artist him or herself brings that magic to the music we all love!

Pitch correction devices have been in use by professional vocalists such as Cher for over 10 years for live shows and in the recording studio..

I think everything is fair game when sound is being used as a utility...I'm not sure how I feel about stuff like this when it comes to music though. Just to put my comment into context, I would consider the "music" of mass market pop stars (like Brittany Spears) to fall within the category of a utility.

Maybe another way to say it is that the entertainment industry is not solely art. There may be a lot of art involved, but it's always in the service of making money. As long as an image can be maintained, then the entertainment is made possible and people will pay to see it.
