I bought these puppies on Nov. 25, 1986 and only recently decided to go the single driver speaker route, so I am parting with my original Forte speakers in walnut oil. They are in great condition. I guess if I was putting them on Audiogon I would rate them 8/10 simply due to the age. (The passive radiators on the rear of each speaker are slightly pushed in, but as everyone know this doesn't affect the sound.) About a year ago I upgraded them with Bob Crites X-overs and titanium tweeters (I have the original phenolic tweter diaphragms if you are interested). They never sounded sweeter. I have the original bill of sale, instruction book and July 1986 article by Julian Hirsch in Stereo Review that made me go out and buy these speakers.
They were built in the 63rd week of 1986 and bear the following serial numbers: 8663049 and 8663050. So they are a sequential pair: #049 and #050. They were inspected by R. Wyatt and tested by J. Clayton. This information is on the back labels of the speakers.
I don't want to ship these speakers due to their weight and the fact that I don't have the original shipping boxes. You can come by my house in Greenville, S.C., close to Atlanta and Charlotte, to pick them up. Heck, I will even treat you to lunch, with South Carolina sweet tea to wash it down.
I am listing them for $600 due to their condition and the upgrades. Without the upgrades I would list them at $500.
all best, Michael
