    Re: What Happened to Drums?

It's funny that I come across this thread just as I put on a Max Roach Compilation.......It's actually a lousy recording but the drums sound awesome compared to most of whats out there today. I really think thats it's a very insidious and sinister plan to "dumb" down the population....get everyone used to over compressed, thin recordings, and producers don't have to spend time and money getting the sound "just right".... mediocre is the new HIFI! I'm a bassist....try showing up to "sit in" and all they have is a Mac with garbage band playing a drum beat..."better program a bass beat I'm outta here!!!"

Oh yeah, the other thing I noticed is that drums are now the most dominant and prominant instrument in pop music. Louder than vocals, louder than pianos, guitars - everything. If you listen to pop music from the 50s you hardly can hear any drums (a good thing). Then a bit louder in each decade until now it seems like music is nothing BUT drums with some side crap thrown in for good measure.

I love this topic! I was commenting to my favorite local jazz group about the same thing. I have an LP by Barry Miles (he plays on a lot of Al DiMeola's albums) and it was a direct-to-disc recording. The transients from the drums and acoustic bass would send today's engineer reaching for the compressor knob. Yet I love that raw sound because it's very natural. Even the guitar, which was sounding like it was plucked, sounded very percussive. I often wondered how a drummer who sits behind a drum set would percieve some of the modern pop recordings of drums. Even non-pop, this jazz group recorded an album recently and though Ilove what they did with the drummer's metal, the skins for me were recoded from too far away, giving it a sound like he was in the back of the room, but his cymbals were right there with you.

What is the name of the CD and where is it available?

Oh, sorry... it's the Ron Kobayashi Trio. His MySpace has a couple videos...check out the bass player, Baba. Then again, Ron is a great pianist as Steve is an excellent drummer...  check them all out!

This is their CD: "Of Standards, Be-Bop and Swing"

And It's available, along with their other CDs at Carpetcat Records

There's even a genre of music now called "drum 'n bass".  Can't think of any notable tunes in that category, though, I've just seen it mentioned in the entertainment weekly music reviews.

Nice set. Tony Roister is always a good one, though I still like his video from when he was like 12 better.

Drummers got tired of being in the back of the bus. So they marched forward. Inevitable and justifiable Africanization which was always there anyway at the root.

    mdeneen:

When I listen to records before say 1975 or so drum kits sound well, like real drum kits. There is no mistake that a stick is hitting a skin covered thing and each of the drums sound unique and very interesting individually and as a set. Also, drums were recorded in a fairly open space and seeemed to have a lot of air around them. Then suddenly drums began to sound not liuke drums at all. The sound became totally dull, similar no matter what drum was being hit, and the drum kit lost all it's air and space. The main sound being the "thunk" which sounds like a 2x4 hitting a sofa cushion. Also, the got so loud the now seem to lead the band on pretty much all music. As though the drum is a lead instrument. Now, I know it can't ALL be drum machines, can it? Or, is something radically different about modern kits versus vintage?

Great topic Mark and it's a known fact that most recordings coming out today have jacked up bass output on them. IMHO it's do to the aggression thing and for auto stereo'sSad I had a buddy visiting from Boston last night and I recently turned him onto some Glenn Hughes (Trapeze) with Glenn's latest release Soul Mover. He is just turning 40 so I turned him onto Trapeze's 1970 release "Medusa". He could not believe how tight and clean a rock band they were and just what kind of great rock was being released when he was only 2! LOL

Anyway to jump into your stick agaisnt the skin it was prevelant on Dave Hollands kit that a real drum was having the living daylights pounded out of it and although my redbook CD of this album is not very good it still conveyed the quality of the perfomance and realism. Where it really shines is on my vinyl copies and I have about 3 of each releaseBig Smile For me the right amount of mics and placement are the key and leave the massaging filters outIndifferent

Just say no to drum machinesIdea

    Re: What Happened to Drums?

I think that in general, drummers and bass players have gotten better with time and have been able to step out of just a support role within music to being another solo or lead instrument. Stanley Clark came along in the 70s and said, "play the bass not just as a bass, but as any other instrument." My own feeling is that if you have a player like Victor Wooten, Stanley Clark, Jeff Berlin, Baba Elefante, etc, I wanna hear what they are playing. I think that when you have Vic Wooten playing with Bela Fleck, the bass, which is obviously processed to sound loud, sounds great! The same woulg go for the drummer. If he's just a time keeper, then keep it down in the mix. But if you have a drummer doing interesting accents, they can contribute as much to a piece as a good guitar or keyboard lead.

    +1 on the "Trapeze's 1970 release "Medusa""

I remember "Black Cloud" back then... listen

Shades of Grand Funk, but really sorta sounds like they influenced  Free's "All Right Now" that came out the next year.
