The Tape Project is putting out some top quality copies.... But remember they are 3rd generation copies...   Thats why i go out and find new talent to record..... Investing in good mic,s is the only upfront cost....   There is alot of good talent out there plus being part of the live recording adventure.  Untill you expierence the Master tape,,,, Nothing really like it.   Buying a tape recorder for just playback is only half the fun.

Why must someone always inject negativity into someone else's good fortune?

I'm sure Maron wasn't trying to sour the excitement - just put it into perspective. I mean for $300, you are entitled have very high expectations and according to what I've read, the TP offerings should be a definitive listening experience. The only step up from this would be, as Maron mentioned, the original event followed by the actual master tape.

I have no doubt that with the proper equipment, in the right hands, the results would be mesmerizing. On the other hand, good luck booking Sonny Rollins for a home taping session.

I didnt mean to kick sand into the playback hobby.... But there are alot of good young artists out there and would be glad to play in front of your microphones.,, Remember a tape RECORDER,,,Also records as well.... I have been recording for 30 years,,(When blank tapes were cheap)  That was when i was young and in my prime.....Now older and retired.... I know have time to sit and enjoy the artists that stood in front of my micraphones.  Raw tapes are now $30 to $40 for a 10inch reel.... but to me i can still record at least 6 more music groups for the price of $200 or $300.   First generation tape...  It seems people are too occupied to make the effort to get out there and be part of the live expierence.  You dont know how many buddung Sonny Rollins are out there...  Hundreds of recording are released each month...  very few will make a hit.

Just excersize your back lift that recorder off the shelf,,, Sure you,l make some mistakes,,,I have,,, Some real doozies...  But once you get the passion you wont regret it. The rewards will amaze you,,,

No worries Jay... When those tapes arrive, you will have the experience that only a few folks have shared - listening to some great artists as close to the original recording session as you can get (aside from the actual Master tapes). The rest of us just have to sit back and wait for your review and try to imagine what it might be like.

Speaking of the live event, my wife and I have been going to see some great jazz groups at a friends home (he calls it 'Jazzway 6004'). The idea is to invite jazz players over to the house, bring in about 100 folks, feed them good food and nice wine and put on a show. The host's wife is a jazz singer (on the side) and a great cook to boot and all the $ left over (the tix are $30) goes directly to the musicians - its a very good arrangement for everybody as all the dates have sold out. Most of the artists hail from the Baltimore/DC/Philly area but there's plenty of good musicians in that pool and occasionally, they've had some international guests (a couple of exceptional jazz guitarists from France and Brazil come to mind). The wife/host has a very nice voice and I've noticed a bit of a voice-bias in the schedule - about 70% jazz singers so far. I lean more to instrumental jazz so I've missed a few shows but the experience is wonderful and I highly recommend the venue to anyone in the area. My wife isn't much of a jazz enthusiast but she absolutely loves the camaraderie, atmosphere and wine.

Buxter,,, Reel to reel player, Sure,,, Ampex,, Crown,, Magnecord,,Berlant,, Viking,, come to mind..  I played my collection of Barkley Crocker tapes on them.  Marantz mod 7 and 7T preamps have tape head preamp positions on them...if you wanted to bypass the playback circuits on the tape machines.

Just Curious....Are any of you guys bypassing your decks internal pre and running strait off the head to an out board tape preamp??? If so with what results??? I'm getting a Revox B77 mkII in about a week and was just pondering the posibilities..........Hmm

See there you go again with the negativity!!!! A lot of the music I like cannot be recorded because the musicans are no more, so the next best thing is to get the best source I can. The TP tapes seemed to be a logical choice, due to work, a wife, and other interest I don't have the time to go out and make recordings. If it is your cup of tea great, then knock yourself out!!!!, but at the same time don't rain on my parade for whatever reason you can come up with. Just do your thing and leave me to mine, if you feel nothing but negitive towards what I or someone else is doing keep it to yourself and don't reply to my post. Have a great day.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Buckster it's not his opinion that I have a problem with, it is the negative comments and the general negativity of his comments.

Jay, I really don't believe he is being negative ........ his responses are no different than he usually post's, and I'll bet you, his tongue was in his cheek when he wrote that. He just enjoys recording, that's all ............. Enjoy your tapes !!!!!!!!!

Buxter ,,,Dont worry i dont take offense..... Some people are "thin skinned" when trying to elaborate on expanding one interests into other possible ventures of reel to reel ....  You could talk about LP records and the quality of playback.... But not realize you can make your own and cut your own records... Some guys I know are really good at it.,,,,  Yes J i really do enjoy my tapes,,,,All 500 of them,,, But I dont live in the past,,,I look to the future seek out more good,,No I mean excellent talent.  But if you want to spend $200 bucks to hear Sonny Rollins again be my guest... He sounds just fine on my $3.95 LP  Oh and I heard him live too,,, great talent.

Fenderbender.... I dont think you need to bypass your playback preamps on your unit... They are pretty darn good.... But like the old Viking units the playback was not that great ,,, and having the oppertunity to use the better preamps like the Marantz 7 sure sounded better.
