    Maron Horonzak:

Buxter ,,,Dont worry i dont take offense..... Some people are "thin skinned" when trying to elaborate on expanding one interests into other possible ventures of reel to reel ....  You could talk about LP records and the quality of playback.... But not realize you can make your own and cut your own records... Some guys I know are really good at it.,,,,  Yes J i really do enjoy my tapes,,,,All 500 of them,,, But I dont live in the past,,,I look to the future seek out more good,,No I mean excellent talent.  But if you want to spend $200 bucks to hear Sonny Rollins again be my guest... He sounds just fine on my $3.95 LP  Oh and I heard him live too,,, great talent.

Maron if you read my original post it is about my TP tapes arriving soon, there was no mention about recording, new talent, or any of the other things you mentioned. My feelings are if I wanted to know about those things you mentioned I would have posted asking for info on them. I did not. Oh yea!! a couple of other things, the TP tapes are closer to 1 1/2 generations from the master tapes than the 3 you mention. Also $3.95 LP says alot about well you know what.

The $3.95 was the NEW cost i paid for thr LP when it origionally came out... The reprints today cost quite abit more....  There is no such thing as 1 1/2 generation away....  Master,,Sub master,,, Working parts master,,,What part are you talking about...  Yes the TP project is very important in getting back into tape copy collecting..... If the collecting gets stronger Otari just might come out with a less costly Reel to reel unit..  Maybe even Technics if the demand is there...

Maron if you read my post closer you will see exactlly what I said.   ( the TP tapes are closer to 1 1/2 generations from the master tapes)

I realize there is no such thing, this is the way it was described to me by TP personel. To be precise it is actully a 2nd generation tape.

Fenderbender.... I dont think you need to bypass your playback preamps on your unit... They are pretty darn good.... But like the old Viking units the playback was not that great ,,, and having the oppertunity to use the better preamps like the Marantz 7 sure sounded better.

    Thanks...seems to be the consensus.

I love these threads...more entertaining than UFC.......

Canyon, I empathize with you and see how you could take the comments as "preaching".....and am excited for you about receiving your TP tapes...they should be unreal...just wish that it wouldn't cost $$$$ to change my revox to play @ 15 IPS or I would sign up....maybe someday I'll find another R2R ....

on the other hand I due enjoy the open opinions that this forum brings out......I never even thought about recording live but this has got me thinking....my neighbor is a world class blues harmonica player and he sits in with some great blues players when in town.... and Jeffery Carswell (studio musician and toured with the Jaco Tribute band) Was my Bass instructor for years....and still plays locally . I have a great sansui AX-7 that will mix down 4 mic's ......... I may just see if I can try my hand at recording them...would have been great to have taped some practice sessions of the Jaco tribute band!!!

But It was a hijack off the main topic, Maybe next time post a ancillary thread touting the benefits of recording live...I would have read that !!!

well sorry for getting off topic....enjoy your tapes and I'm looking forward to a real persons review of them

The jist of the socalled hijacking was to point out that a SECOND generation tape is not as transparent is the master tape.. and if one sits to compare,,, it is obvious...  But some will pay to even come close.  But I wouldnt pay somebody else for CLOSE.    Not to mention that the PLAYBACK parties after the concert or recital were pretty festive.   Finding a 15 IPS recorder shouldnt be that hard there are alot of them out there... Its finding one that has NAB and IEC EQ.   On the Audio Asylum (TAPE) they are talking about the Tape Project and play back of same.

Tape Project has been discussed here before, and quite detailed to include a website ..... They are not for the person with an empty wallet. I don't think expressing one's opinion is high-jacking, or offering a suggestion or two is harmful.

Fenderbender if you are really looking a deck that has everything needed to play TP tapes, look at the Otari MX 5050BII-2 it is all you will ever need and can be had at a decent price on ebay amongst other places.

Re: Anyone considering a Tape Project subscription?

Canyonman: Saw a few floating around out there...prices are good....How is the availability of parts for the Otari's ??? One of the many reasons i love the revox is JM techarts still an authorized dealer and repair. I have a bunch of other irons in the fire that I need to pay for now.....I'm rebuilding a Sansui AU-111 and that will be about 1K for labor and tubes, Struck a deal to buy somebody's VRD's after labor day and i know I'll probably get a BBXII to go along with it........Maybe Santa (me) will be good to me (my wife only buy's me shirts) and get me a 15IPS deck and a subscription to the tape project. Plus I started getting the 45 rpm bluenote releases and I'm hooked...Music matters has 60 and acoustic sound another 25.......I'm going to go bankrupt!!!!

Fender don't feel like the Lone Ranger, I too have a subscription to both of the Blue Note series, and the TP. So you are not alone, anyway parts for the Otari's are ready available as Otari is still in buiness and still selling new decks if you care to spend $4600. Not me, let me know if you need more help in search for deck.
