    Beware of Paypal

I had a pair of rb-75's I sold to  D Roy darylomer@hotmail.com a member of this forum only to have him contact Paypal and have them Yank the funds back out off my checking account after I already had shipped the speakers.  Paypal did this without even contacting me first, all because he filed a dispute over not receiving the speakers within 30hrs.  Which is all the time he and Paypal gave me.  I had to spend most of my day contacting FedEx to try and get them to track down the package and hold it at the site so I would not be out the speakers and have no payment.

When I contacted Paypal about this issue they told me that even with the tracking #  that I provided to them that the money would be held until he signed for the package which anyone could refuse to sign for and the package would get returned to the sender.  With the sender paying freight both ways ( in my case $120.00) and the funds would be returned to the purchaser.  My understanding from talking to Paypal is that this can be done by them for a few days after a seller has received the payment, so just because you receive payment from your buyer does not mean that it is safe to ship the package any buyer could use any reason to dispute a purchase and then refuse to sign for the package when it shows up and the seller would be out shipping both ways.

I am not that mad at the purchaser ( there are low life's everywhere ), but Paypal doing this caught me by surprise and I was stunned after telling them I had the tracking # they would not release the money.

Kinda sad but I think everyone might want to just start requesting money orders, personal checks, or at the very least don't ship anything until 3-4 days after the payment is made thru Paypal and you have taken the money from your account.  Hate to ramble on, but just thought some of you might want to know about this buyer and about Paypal.  Hope this never happens to you.  Doug

    Re: Beware of Paypal

Was this thru epay? If so continue reading, if not the below does not apply.

I quit using ebay/paypal because of thier new policy of not releasing funds. With that said, your story is a little different than what i have experienced. I have learned that with certain items, home electronics over $100 is one of them, your funds are held until either the buyer leaves positive feedback or the item is delivered (with a couple of other caveats). I only have a little over 50 feedbacks and they are all positive but paypal wants something like a hundred in the recent past or they hold the funds. I have lost a couple of sells over this (actually sold other ways but the epay buyer lost out). I refuse to let paypal use my money for 30 days to earn interest and I refuse to ship the item until I am paid so no more epay for me. Epay no longer lets you use money orders, checks, etc. Use other avenues rather than epay and have the buyer use paypal to send money and it's immediate as the hold only pertains to epay items.

I do not like to have to be at home to sign for stuff but the last things I sold I refused to send any other way. Use this forum or a-gon, anything but epay!

If this transaction was thru epay, then I would suggest selling to him privately using paypal.

The situation is actually worse than that. My funds were still held after the items were delivered and + feedback were received. I had to email and call PayPal several times for them to release the funds.

I think this happens when the buyer pays with a CC. When I sold some my Heresy speakers the funds were not held even though the amount was higher. Next time I sell on eBay I will indicate that I do not take CC payments with PayPal to test this theory. Otherwise, I won't sell on eBay anymore.

Selling on Audiogon has its own issues..

I don't think ebay lets you sell if you will not accept paypal.

I still use ebay for some stuff, but I sell on CL more and more.

Also don't attach a bank account to paypal, or they will take money back way after the fact.

I once had an issue as a buyer, (long time ago) paypal would not back me up, so I called my CC company and had them dispute the charge.

Soon after I got a leter from paypal saying they were going to cancel my account.

I have never sold on Agon but have a sweet Mc amp I need to sell and was thinking about posting there. What issues do you refer to? (I tried here with no interest)

    Re: Beware of Paypal

sorry about your hassle. here is my 2 cents.

even if you take your  money out of your paypal account immediatly to avoid a hassle and there is no money in your account and a paypal buyer contests your sale .... paypal can garnish your account.

so you then think.... ok- i just wont put anymore money in my paypal account..... that way they cant take it... ( remember they ... that is paypal - know all the rules, and just about all the rules weigh in the buyers side )  its a simi stand off.... but you are the good guy probably and as the seller ... you cant sell with the convience of paypal ....

this scenario happened to me. after about a year  of not useing paypay ( notice i dropped the pal) i finally figured that in the high 90 percentage of the time paypal works pretty good and i kind of like its convience and that i shouldnt let a lame brain buyer totally wreck all my options to do business. so i put the measly 45$ into my account that paypal said i owed the buyer and redeemed myself with paypal.

incidentally i had e-check account during this time and paypal did not access my account to withdraw any unauthorized  withdrawal of money from my bank checking account . so they cannot take money out of your bank account unless you doit yourself..... that is my impression.

I've seen some sellers saying they wouldn't accept CC payments with PayPal. Paypal ayments from bank account, eCheck, etc. are still accepted.

They can say that, but other than refuseing the payment once paypal puts it through, they have no say.

WOW!! At least they got ONE side of the story. I'm not going to turn this into a bickering match and I'm truly sorry things didn't work out. BUT, I am not, in any way shape or form, trying to rip anyone off!!! You told me you DIDN'T ship the speakers this afternoon and I have it on my voicemail. Just please refund my money and the dispute will automatically close. TRUST ME, I WOULD NEVER TRY AND RIP ANYONE OFF. I think most people on here know that, but I just wanted to clear things up.

    Re: Beware of Paypal

pay-pal can only attach funds deposited into your pay-pal account, once the funds are transferred to your bank or otherwise usedd (ie... buy something else and send pay-pal for that) they can not touch that, they will put a hold on your account and lock up any funds in that account, and they will put an automatic hold if they  have your account in arrears for a dispute meaning any money deposited will get get held till dispute is resolved,  also pay-pal only guarantees buyers these so called rights of dispute if the sale goes thru ebay.................buy direct or off audiogon and buyer has no recourse pay-pal will not help you

ASK ME HOW I KNOW TTHESE RULES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Probably for the same reason i know these rules; A box of useless junk for a whole lotta money, and no protection via paypal whatsoever. It's better to use your credit card when making purchases through paypal. That way, you have some form of recourse (at least that's the case with my CC account).

    Re: Beware of Paypal

Wow, is right Daryl.  I know this is a Forum where you may be a member longer and have more post than I but that doesn't make you right or a better person.  We had a deal and you changed your mind and that is fine, but you could have waited to talk to me and we could have got this settled before it cost anyone any money ( but I guess it didn't cost you anything anyway ).  I did not say you tried to rip me off,  you just made a bad decision with how you handled this and it cost me over $60.00 in shipping, because the package was already picked up before I put I stop to it.  Now I just want to make sure people understand how Paypal works and that I wouldn't ship anything right away after receiving payment thru them I would wait until the money clear your account to avoid this type of buyer regret or change of heart.
