    RF5's with Rotel

Hello guys and gals! I have only posted a few times since buying my 5's two years ago and have always been very happy with the responses. I lurk here constantly and am a voracious reader of all the two channel and home theater stuff. This place is loaded with VERY knowledgeable and gracious people and I will thank you in advance. That being said here is my dilemma. I have a Yamaha Natural Sound A27 two channel 150 watts per Amp/receiver bought in 1986 that is powering my RF 5's now. It will play music loud and that is about it! I have a Denon DCM380 CD player running through it and have a Vid/aux switch that lets me run my DVD to the TV and back down to the Reciever. I am going to have $2500 to spend shortly and I need to upgrade badly. I have been watching the board and found several posts about Rotel and how great they compliment Klipsch. I checked out a setup in an audio store yesterday Rotel RMB 1075 AMP with a Rotel RSP 1068 Pre hooked up to a set of B&W towers that go for around $1400 a pair and was told they were similar to my RF 5's. I have to tell you I was blown away. The sound and detail that came out of that setup was unbelievable! I have concerns as to whether my beloved Klipsch will sound as good with that equipment. I have been in LOVE with my speakers since day one and they have only grown on me more and more each day. Tell me that my amp is crap and that is why I was soo knocked out yesterday. Tell me that 120 watts per channel will push my 5's just fine with plenty of head room. Tell me that $2530 is a good price for the Pre/Amp combo. Tell me that Adcom is not the way to go. My dealer friend where I bought the speakers and the Denon player is sold on Adcom and is doing that exclusively.Tell me that buying a surround sound processer that will be used primarily for two channel with hopes of surround one day is the way to go. Tell me what other choices I have besides Rotel that sound that good for the same money. I listen 99% of the time to music and have an extensive collection from Led Zepplin to Steely Dan to Big Head Todd and the Monsters. I plan on someday adding two rears and a center and a sub to the system. That someday will more than likely be a long way off since it has taken twenty years to get where I am today. I am passionate about music and only wish I had the funds do it all! Sorry about the length of this and thanks again for all your help! Dave

Interesting! I went through a similar experience when I decided to use some extra cash for a home theater. I bought the Rotel 1068/1075 combo and I auditioned a number of speakers (B&W, Paradigm, Dynaudio, JML Labs and a few others). I had a pair of Klipsch Forte I purchased in 1986 and I intended to upgrade my speakers. I listened to the B&W 703's and 5.1 setup with the Nautilus 804's. When I came home and listened to my Forte's (they were being driven by a Yamaha receiver) I realized that I hadn't heard anything that warranted $4000-$5000-- at least in comparison to my Forte's. The B&W's will not deliver the low frequency response that your Klipsch speakers will. You will notice the difference. Good luck and have fun!

Dave, the 1068 is an outstanding unit, for 2ch music it really excells, its easy to set up and operate, imo. The 1075 is a good solid amp and should do fine w/the 5s.The only problem I have is the price, the 1068 could go $1500 new,it sells for about $1100-1300 used. The 1075 sells used for about $650 quite often, new I would not pay more than $800.The set new would be a good buy at $2200+tx.I would make the offer and dicker a little maybe,if not I'd get the 1068 and find a used amp,for $1k you'll have lots of choices, especially used.

For musicality its gonna be hard to beat the 1068 @ anything less than $1500 new, imo.

Just thought I would mention that Audiogon has a 1056 for $800,its one of the best units period in that range, add a 2ch amp for about $500 and you won't do much better at $1300 total, again imo, good luck.

Thank you for your response! So if I understand you correctly I should go with the Rotel setup? The 120 watts per channel with be sufficient? I will have plenty of headroom for when I want to really crank it? The RF 5's actually will sound better than I could have ever imagined and will blow the B&W's away that I heard yesterday? Thank you!

Fish, I really appreciate your input and I think I am following you. New on the Rotel I need to get him down about $300. You think the pre amp is priced right and I could do fine with a used Amp in the $1000 range for two channel? Should I stick with two channel since that is mainly what I enjoy? Will the 120 watts per drive my 5"s with sufficient "headroom"? Am I givng anything up by trying to have 5 channel capibilty when 99% of the time I am into 2 channel? Are my 5's going to stand up to the B&W's? Is Adcom totally out of the question or should I give them a listen also?
