    Re: Right This Minute

     Happy Friday Everyone!  Yes

    Dead Set                                                2 LP Set

    Grateful Dead

    1981 Arista Records

Recorded live at the Warfield Theater, San Francisco, September 25-October 14, 1980 and at Radio City Music Hall, New York City, October 22-31, 1980.

The Grateful Dead ...    Full Descriptionrequired a live setting in order to play at their peak, so they toured incessantly and released many a live record, sometimes even following one with another. And it made sense, because the touring Dead were a work in progress, a constantly evolving experiment. Night after night, they would rework and rediscover their songs in a way that no other band did. On any given night, they could be stellar, inspired, meandering, or downright sloppy--sometimes all four--but on any given night, there was always at least a little bit of that ineffable Dead magic.

DEAD SET was recorded in the fall of 1980 in California and New York. This collection steers clear of the extended twists and turns of a typical Dead show and stays in well-charted, melodic territory. No long space jams here, and only a truncated drum solo. Instead, there are singable crowd favorites like "Fire on the Mountain," "Franklin's Tower," a bunch from the classic AMERICAN BEAUTY ("Friend of the Devil," "Brokedown Palace," "Candyman") and a fiery version of "New Minglewood Blues," a traditional song they covered on their very first record.

The Grateful Dead: Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir (vocals, guitar); Phil Lesh (vocals, bass); Brent Mydland (keyboards); Bill Kreutzmann (drums); Mickey Hart (percussion).

    Harvest Moon                                CD

    Neil Young

    1992 Reprise Records

Both artistically and stylistically HARVEST MOON is the successor to HARVEST, Neil Young's landmark acoustic album from 1971, which featured the No. 1 single, "Heart Of Gold."

The song "Harvest Moon" was nominated for a 1994 Grammy Award ...    Full Descriptionas "Record Of The Year."

Neil Young's sequel to 1972's HARVEST found him reuniting with the Stray Gators and inviting along a few other famous friends. Unlike Crazy Horse's sonic bludgeoning, the Gators' light playing featured ethereal-sounding pedal steel and harmonies that caressed like a gentle lover. This was the perfect compliment for Young's songwriting, which was fueled by romantic notions of courtship and deep thought. Young and Nicolette Larson harmonized and became the lovers of "You and Me," whereas Jack Nitzsche's string arrangements made for a nice contrast in "Such a Woman," a bold-faced declaration of love. Other insights into the normally cranky iconoclast's sentimental side include the delicate touch of the title track, which leaves an image of slow-dancing in a dark corner.

Fast approaching 50, Neil Young also used HARVEST MOON to reflect back on his life, particularly in the biographical "One of These Days," and "From Hank to Hendrix," a twangy sequel to "My My, Hey Hey (Out of The Blue)." Young also continued his commitment to the environment by including both a protest against man's destruction of nature ("War of Man") and a live tribute to the forest and jungles recorded at a Portland, Oregon performance that included sounds of the Brazilian rainforest ("Natural Beauty.")

Certified platinum 1992 album arranged by Jack Nitzsche and featuring background singers Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor. 10 tracks. Reprise.

Recorded at Redwood Digital, Woodside, California.

Personnel: Neil Young (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Kenny Buttrey, Tim Drummond, Ben Keith, Spooner Oldham, Astrid Young, Larry Cragg.

    My Romance                                       CD

    Carly Simon

    1990 Arista Records

Like those albums, there's a theme running through these 12 songs, a romantic wistfulness which allies standards like "My Funny Valentine" with lesser-known gems like "Little Girl Blue." Unlike TORCH, MY ROMANCE is a period-style recording, ...    Full Descriptionwith intimate, almost entirely acoustic arrangements, and the tasteful use of a full orchestra. This is one of the most satisfying albums of Simon's career.

Carly Simon's MY ROMANCE, while lacking hits on the level of its predecessor, 1987's COMING AROUND AGAIN, solidified the singer-songwriter's commercial and artistic comeback. A second foray into the world of jazz and pop standards, following 1981's TORCH, MY ROMANCE pulls off the interesting feat of being an extremely personal-sounding album constructed almost entirely of covers, in the same vein as Frank Sinatra's classic string of concept albums with Nelson Riddle in the '50s.

Personnel: Carly Simon (vocals, piano); Jimmy Ryan (guitar); Michael Brecker (saxophone); Marvin Stamm (trumpet); Michael Kosarin (piano); Jay Leonhart (acoustic bass); Wayne Pedzwiatr (bass); Steve Gadd (drums); Gordon Gottlieb (percussion).
