Two Knights At The Blackhawk                                         LP

    Brubeck  Desmond

    1953 Fantasy Records

Following a near-fatal swimming accident which incapacitated him for several months, Brubeck organized The Dave Brubeck Quartet in 1951, with Desmond on saxophone. They took up a long residency at San Francisco's Black Hawk nightclub and gained great popularity touring college campuses, recording a series of albums with such titles as Jazz at Oberlin (1953), Jazz at College of the Pacific (1953), and Brubeck's debut on Columbia Records, Jazz Goes to College (1954). In that same year, he was featured on the cover of Time magazine, the second jazz musician to be so honored (the first was Louis Armstrong on February 21, 1949.[7])

Hey up!  I recorded & mixed this album, lots of fun with a truly talented musician.

Also; I think we're witnessing an eseoteric smackdown between PM & Boxx tonight.  This can only end in tears (or Medieval music).

Philip... I'm giving this a second play, tonight.  Outstanding....  My compliments... highly recommended...

    For Animals Only                                              LP

    Baja Marimba Band

    1965 A&M Records

Notes:  A fun little record that is full of bad puns, familiar rhythms and entirely animal-centric. The cover tells us of the bands leader, "Baja Sr." and a bit of his history.  According to the liner notes, "Baja was first inspired to do the LP one night while watching a tattered old 8 mm rental film. The picture was a travel adventure depicting the age old battle between the sloth and his natural enemy, the squid." So you see what we're dealing with here, folks, The cover art is a blend of the band the creatures found within the grooves. Of note, Mr. Wechter can be found amongst the players of Martin Denny's exotic combo.

Arranged by:  Julius Wechter and Herb Alpert

    Sweet Baby James                                                    LP

    James Taylor

    1970 Warner Bros. Records

Though James Taylor's self-titled debut introduced his mellow melodicism and affecting songcraft, SWEET BABY JAMES was the album that rocketed him to national recognition. With SWEET BABY JAMES, Taylor abandoned the slightly psychedelic structural ...    Full Descriptionambition of his first record (the first side was composed as a suite), and settled fully into the folk and country styles to which he is best suited. The top ten hit "Fire and Rain," for instance, a deeply personal story-song based on the artist's experiences in mental hospitals and the suicide of a friend, is built around Taylor's gentle, understated voice, acoustic guitar, cello, piano, and drums.

The plaintive, melancholic air of "Fire and Rain" resonated with millions of listeners, as did the rest of the album. Taylor's lyrics, which address personal identity, religion, and relationships lost and struggling, are highly confessional, yet associative and lyrical enough to reflect the lives of listeners. At times, he marries the plight of the sensitive soul to the myth of the cowboy in songs like the title track, a kind of campfire lullaby, or to country traditions, as in "Country Road." In all, these elements combine to make SWEET BABY JAMES, arguably, Taylor's definitive statement, and one of the most influential albums in the singer-songwriter genre.

    After Midnight                                                              LP

Nat 'King' Cole and his Trio

    1956 Capitol Records

    Amazon.com

Nat "King" Cole endured more than his share of scorn and rebuke from all manner of fans and critics. He wasn't jazzy enough to satisfy many, not white enough to please the pop cultural obsession with Anglo- and Euro-American stardom. In answer to all of this, Cole simply proceeded, crooning beautifully even after he'd walked away from the piano and become primarily a vocal sensation. This 1956 collection is famous as Cole's riposte to the critique that he wasn't jazzy. The session brings several Swing Era stars on board: violinist Stuff Smith, trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison, trombonist Juan Tizol, and alto saxophonist Willie Smith. The horns and violin fronted a semistandard jazz setup of guitar, drums, and percussion, along with Cole's own considerable chops on piano. As an improviser, Cole heavily influenced a generation of ivory ticklers, including Oscar Peterson and others, and here he shows himself a stellar pianist. His runs bespeak Cole's utter perfection on the keyboard. This is a crucial document. --Andrew Bartlett
