ProMedia 2.1 Problems -- HELP Needed -- Fuse, Subwoofer, power to speakers

    Hello.

This is my first post and it is long as I wanted to include all relevant information. Thanks in advance for your patience with any repeat of material covered in any other posts.

    Equipment:

ProMedia 2.1 THX. Speakers and Subwoofer -- V2.1 - 01031221, SA Project Number 205697. Purchased from CompUSA in approximately 2004 so believe any warranty period as expired. Have been lightly used.

Problem: Subwoofer made deep rumbling sounds, then went silet. Green light on right speaker went out.

Have read posts tagged ProMedia 2.1 (sectionid:14) with particular attention to those tagged "fuse."

    Attempted Resolution:

    • Checked all connections -- solid.
    • Checked fuse -- Found blown fuse in subwoofer.
    • I couldn't find the Radio Shack part number-270-1064 (2 amps, 250 volt slow blow) fuses that Amy Unger listed. So, I replaced the blown fuse with a RadioShack 2A, 250-Volt, 5x20mm, GMA-Type, fast-acting fuse. (270-1052)
    • Fuse immediately blew, as did the next two. Tried different outlets and surge protectors with new fuses. All blew.

QUESTION -- Is this an unsuitable fuse to use as a replacement or is there some other problem such as a bad resistor (read in other posts)?

The Digi-Key part number F978-ND mentioned in one of the posts is no longer available. The replacement part is listed as F24020-ND and described as FUSE 250V IEC SLO-BLO 5X20MM 2A.

QUESTION -- Since I can't find the 1064's, would the above be a suitable replacement for the subwoofer fuse?

QUESTION -- If not, can anyone provide the part number/specifications for a suitable replacement fuse?

QUESTION -- What are the recommended next steps?

QUESTION -- Is there any way to use the speakers without the subwoofer?

Thanks in advance for any help.

have you tested the Control Pod for Electrical Shorts? it is possible that your DIN plug can be responsible for it. Carefully take apart your control pod and test the connections of each terminal and trace them to what pin on the plug they go to, and then see if you get a signal from any toher terminal from the same pins. if so you have a short there, if not you may have something al ittle more serious going on to wear it can be the Control Pod itself, or an internal Circuitry problem, and if that is the case, it will cost you almost as much to get it fixed as it would to just buy a new system. if you need someone to repair your control pod din plug for you, I can help with that for $17. but test it with the Voltage meter and make sure that is the problem first. otherwise it is just wasted money.

Mister_Clean -- thank you for your suggestion. In my case, the subwoofer fuse fails even though the DINplug isn't connected.

This is a follow-up to my original post.

I was able to find the correct Radio Shack fuses (Part Number 270-1064).

These also blew as soon as I powered on the subwoofer.

A call to tech support at 888-554-5665 was promptly answered. I was informed the problem was the amplifier inside the subwoofer and since my system is out of warranty, a paid repair would be required. The cost is $40.

I plan send in the amplifier for repair and look forward to having a working system as soon as the repaired amp is returned.

Thank you to tech support representative "Travis" for his friendly assistance in identifying the problem, setting up a "case" file for my repair, and providing me with the RMA and shipping information.

is it $40 total? or do you also have to pay shipping to Sybesma, or whatever that company was called, lol.
