Quick fix for ProMedia 5.1 problem

If you're having problems with the ProMedia 5.1 system, try bypassing any form of power strip or UPS and test it plugged into an outlet.

I've read a number of posts from people with the same symptoms I encountered, and that fixed my problems.

     Initial symptoms:

All 5 satellite speakers started going out intermittently.  They'd work for a few minutes on reboot, then fail.  The subwoofer always continued to work though.

After a week or two of that, the satellites stopped working completely; I never lost the subwoofer though.

This problem can be a little misleading.  If you open up the sub, you’ll have 120 Vac through the first power supply board (fuse & relay); and the correct DC levels on the output of the Indigo rectifier board.  (~75 Vdc for the subwoofer circuit, and ~52 Vdc for the satellite circuits).  There’s a Bash HC1011 hybrid circuit for the subwoofer and one for all 5 satellites.  The output of the subwoofer side should be ~10 Vdc, and ~7.5 Vdc for each satellite.  The voltage to the sub will be correct, but you’ll see -0.5 Vdc for each satellite amp board.  It looks like there might be something wrong with the final stage of the Bash HC1011 board, but before you start soldering, bypass all power strips and extension cords of any kind.

This is good information, thanks josh, I will try the fix out when I get home.

I'm have this exact problem right now.  I have passed the point where the satellites work after a reboot.  They will occasionally work for a few minutes after everything has been powered down for awhile.

Is would be great if someone at Klipsch could give more specific information about what is going on so that us EE types might be able to solve the problem ourselves?  Given the intermittent nature of the problem, it doesn't seem to require a $100 or repair or spending $150 for a new amp.

I used a long extension cord to plug my amp into a grounded circuit with less load.  I have been playing games and music a vol level of 50-60 for a couple of hours now with no problems.  It seems like some of the reported amp failures might just be the amp protecting itself from bad power.  Thanks, you saveed me $150!

Thats what I have been thinking also.  I've just had some dirty power run though my place.  It destroyed my computer's PSU, but the rest of my equipment was fine.  Very strange.

Anyways, I thought the amp replacements were only 65$?

Repair is $65 for the Ultra, but I have the THX and repair is $90.  No one at Klipsch seems to know the difference between the two systems which explains this discrepancy.  However, you can order a new amp for either system for $150.  This option saves time, shipping charges, and I would get to keep my current amp, so that is what I was thinking about going with (If not just ordering a set of Logitechs).

It is more difficult and costly for us to get replacement parts for the older THX system, I believe.

So, the amps are actually different?  Are the speakers different?  The people I spoke with were under the impression that two systems were equivalent, so I ordered two Ultra satellites as replacement for a dropped THX satellite.  It would be great if you could let me know the differences in the two system (besides the aesthetics) as I was considering ordering more "replacement parts" before they are not available anymore.  Thanks for your help, Amy!

I've had my THX's for nearly 5 years.  Works perfectly fine.

EDIT:  My bad, I didn't see that some items were currently unavailable.

Yes, there are differences between the amps and the satellite speakers, as well as the controllers.  A lot of parts are interchangeable (not all), but they are different.  Since the THX system has been discontinued since 2003, the parts are harder to obtain.  I don't have details on what is different technically, besides the crossovers in the sats...

If you do not see something listed for sale in parts, feel free to call 888-554-5665 to see if they are available.  Sometimes we have just a few pieces left, so we take them off the website.

Stop using garbage Antec or Shark Technologies power supplies.Yes Antec is a POS ...they are known to fail "en masse" and most have leaky caps plys are noisy(caps).

You want a quality power supply. PC Power & Cooling ,I have the 510 Deluxe and the 1KW in the larger PC.Not cheap

In the less expensive Ultra brand power supplies are way better than Antec(POS). No longer can we trust Antec..as failures are abnormally high.

    NEW improved signature ! V.2

CROWN,QSC,FaceAudio at the heart of my soon to be subsonic dream system.Over 50KW worth of pure juice, extension and output limitations no more.
